Children need to play to learn. They learn to think, learn to walk, learn hand and eye coordination all while playing. Imagination is learned thru play. Help with attention span and motor skill development. Rattles encourage child’s sight and hearing. Toys placed just out of a child’s reach encourages then to crawl. Pull toys encourages children to walk. We see to many children on electronic toys, these toys take away the child’s thinking, and imagination. The people that develop these electronics know this and do not have their children on them.

DWToys, etc. is trying to bring fun childhood toys we all grew up with and enjoyed. Each toy is handcrafted, safe and since each is handmade, one of a kind. Left as natural wood, with a beeswax finish or painted with non-toxic child safe paint. These toys are made to be played with and made to last.
This is a new business that was started by father and son, who wanted children and families to enjoy playing together. In today’s world, we see more children as young as age one, with some type of electronic device such as a phone, tablet, TV, or computer for long periods of time.
Questions started coming up. With more emphasis at school on developing academic skills at a very young age, what role does pretend play have in early childhood? Should schools take play time away for children to study more?
Way before this movement to learn, children were learning cognitive and social skills that is a prerequisite for more complex concepts later. Play is linked with growth of memory, self-regulation, oral language, recognizing symbols, reading, math and social development.
Before the 1990’s children would go outside and play, and many families had game nights. Little boys used their imagination flying planes, driving cars, and playing soldiers, under their own power and imagination. Little girls did the same with dolls, dishes and both with forts and playhouses. Somehow in today’s world, that play became a luxury.
Play is the cornerstone for all learning, and we each need to stand firm in our support of play. Where even as adults, the child within can come out and play, and children and be children!
